Lo studio analizza il modo in cui gli alberi possono entrare in relazione con gli esseri umani non solo come risorse naturali o metafore culturali, ma come potenziali attori nel contesto ecologico e sociale nell’era dell’Antropocene. L’oggetto di studio è il Castagno dei Cento Cavalli, un albero storico plurimillenario situato nel comune di Sant’Alfio (CT), in Sicilia. Basandosi su osservazioni sul campo, oltre a fonti secondarie e interviste a operatori locali e a turisti, emerge che gli alberi secolari rappresentano elementi centrali nei paesaggi e nel patrimonio locale, influenzando non solo lo sviluppo di attività economiche come il turismo rurale, il benessere e l’agricoltura, ma anche contribuendo a una visione integrata e complessa della relazione tra natura, società e pianeta Terra.

Trees and Identity Metaphors. The Case Study of the Castagno dei Cento Cavalli
The study examines how trees can interact with humans not only as natural resources or cultural metaphors but also as potential actors within the ecological and social context of the Anthropocene. The subject of the study is the Castagno dei Cento Cavalli, a millennia-old historic tree located in the municipality of Sant’Alfio (CT), Sicily. Based on field observations, various secondary sources, and interviews with local stakeholders and tourists, the research highlights that ancient trees serve as central elements in landscapes and local heritage. They influence not only the development of economic activities such as rural tourism, well-being, and agriculture but also contribute to an integrated and complex understanding of the relationship between nature, society, and the planet Earth.
