La consapevolezza della portata di fenomeni come quello della tarda industrializzazione e delle ricadute conseguenti, al di là della mera questione economica, fa sì che il filone di studi si rinnovi di continuo con contributi che come questo tentano, oltre a tracciare nuove traiettorie interpretative, anche di segnalarne ulteriori sviluppi. Il focus di osservazione è centrato su una regione del Mezzogiorno d’Italia e in particolare su alcuni casi studio tramite i quali l’autore mette in luce le complesse relazioni che pongono queste particolari attività produttive, l’industria cosiddetta pesante, in conflitto con l’ambiente e in coesistenza con gli usi alternativi delle dotazioni territoriali. La ricerca prende avvio da un quadro generale dell’odierna situazione e ne descrive alcune problematiche, dato che l’industria è stata spesso collocata in zone sensibili dal punto di vista ambientale, sia che si tratti di habitat naturali o di zone prossime alle comunità umane. Se la deindustrializzazione da un canto sembra risolvere il problema con l’arretramento delle attività produttive, dall’altro non elimina di per sé fattori che restano comunque inquinanti.

Late Industrialism in Sicily, between Coexistences and Conflicts
The awareness of the extent of phenomena such as that of late industrialization and of the consequent repercussions, beyond the mere economic question, means that the line of studies is constantly renewed with contributions, like this one, which attempt, in addition to tracing new interpretative trajectories, to report further developments. The observation focus is centered on a region of Southern Italy and, in particular, on some case studies through which the author highlights the complex relationships that place these particular productive activities, the so-called heavy industry, in conflict with the environment and in coexistence with the alternative uses of territorial endowments. The research starts with an overview of today’s situation and describes some of the issues, given that the industry has often been placed in sensitive areas from an environmental point of view, whether it be of natural habitats or areas close to human communities. If deindustrialization, on the one hand, seems to solve the problem with the setback of production activities, on the other hand it does not eliminate factors that still remain polluting.
