Changing Skin: The Mutable Territorial Identities of Inner Areas
The article discusses the relationship between territorial identities and inner areas, with particular reference to the identity changes they are experiencing in recent years, due to the combined effect of uncontrollable events such as the Covid-19 pandemic and particularly incisive policies such as the National Strategy for Inner Areas (SNAI). Phenomena such as rural gentrification, the musealization and heritagization of the territory, the creation of tourist itineraries, remote working and the return to hamlets are changing our very idea of what an inner area is. In this shifting magma, taking stock of the identity question can trigger new geographical reasoning.
