At the beginning of XIX century, rural communities in Sardinia were able to reproduce themselves on the basis of independent systems of autonomous subsistence (i.e. systems determined neither by the state nor by the market). An essential task of "traditional" rural societies was to maintain an ecological balance between the fertility of the land and the intensity of the agricultural, forest and pastoral harvesting. This goal was accomplished through various rotation systems in the uses of soils and in the recycling of organic elements, which were combined together in order to avoid jeopardizing systems of life regeneration. In this respect all peasant societies are alike all over the world, as they have developed a wide range of customs and community institutions. It is therefore important to undertake an in-depth approach on their civic characters and on the relationships they share with the commons issues.
