The paper analyses the re-emergence of squatting initiatives in Rome as a response to the worsening effects of the current crisis and the adoption of austerity policies. The main argument is that these initiatives are realized by those “expelled†from the welfare system and do not address sectorial claims since they represent spaces of the urban common. The paper therefore challenges the model recently proposed by Pruijt (2013) as respect to three points: the categories themselves; the actors realizing these initiatives; the claims addressed through a spatial practice.
