Despite the current economic situation of the entire country and the technical constraints typical of Rome, the extension of the existing Metro Network is progressively being carried out by Roma Metropolitane, on behalf of the City Government. On the whole the existing network will double to four Lines, stretching to about 100 km with 100 stations. Currently work on two projects is in progress and fully financed: Line C – the third line of the Metro in Rome and one of the biggest European construction projects underway – and Line B1 – a new branch of the existing Line B. For the next phase of the Program, Roma Metropolitane isworking to define the most appropriate solution for the necessary financing. New financing patterns are being explored, with a view to resources generated from territorial assets. Therefore it is necessary to fix specific tender procedures to acquire technical/financial proposals from the market to award concessions to private contractors. In Rome, some particular conditions make the realization of underground works very hard, creating real challenges. The difficult soil and hydraulic conditions, the proximity of existing multi-storey or historical buildings requires specific design analyses, special construction techniques and a careful management of the construction process. On the work in progress many special techniques and technologies were applied: trench cutter, jet-grouting, compensation grouting, EPB type TBMs. Line C is considered an 'Archeological Metro' because it has given rise to the biggest archeological investigation ever. On the basis of the archeological survey results, the Heritage Authorities laid-out some norms or directives for the final design of the Stations in the central stretch of Line C. To protect the historic monuments, under Unesco protection, a Technical and Scientific Committee is assisting the technicians and the planners.
