The paper offers an alternative interpretation of the Tabula Banasitana, that focuses on the artifact and on the symbolic meaning that its features might have acquired within the cultural context of the Mauritania Tingitana. According to this interpretation the non- Romanised Maurus would have seen the object through the lenses of his own cultural traditions, recognising it as a “holy stone” carryng a divine validation to the Roman rule.
