Le isole di Ventotene e Santo Stefano fanno parte dell’arcipelago ponziano e hanno un’estensione territoriale complessiva inferiore ai due chilometri quadrati. A dispetto delle limitate dimensioni, queste piccole isole del Tirreno di origine vulcanica sono estremamente ricche sotto il profilo ambientale e naturalistico. E sono proprio le peculiarità ambientali e paesaggistiche, unite alle testimonianze di epoca romana e alla presenza del carcere borbonico, ad attirare ogni anno flussi di turisti. Di qui la necessità di tutelare l’intero territorio con un’area marina protetta e una riserva naturale statale. Entrambe rivestono un ruolo fondamentale sia per la protezione dei delicati ecosistemi locali che per lo sviluppo di forme di ecoturismo in grado di salvaguardare nel tempo le risorse naturali e di sostenere lo sviluppo economico locale che proprio sul turismo si fonda. Verranno analizzate, quindi, le varie forme di attività turistiche presenti nell’area oggetto di studio per evidenziarne zone di luce e d’ombra relativamente alla salvaguardia ambientale e alla sostenibilità turistica.

The Marine Protected Area and the State Nature Reserve of the Islands of Ventotene and Santo Stefano between Environmental Protection and Tourist Sustainability
The islands of Ventotene and Santo Stefano are part of the Ponziano archipelago and have a total territorial extension of less than two square kilometers. Despite their limited size, these small islands of the Tyrrhenian Sea, of volcanic origin, are extremely rich from an environmental and naturalistic point of view. And precisely the environmental and landscape peculiarities, together with the testimonies of Roman times and the presence of the Bourbon prison, that attract every year flows of tourists. Hence the need to protect the entire territory with a marine protected area and a state nature reserve. Both play a fundamental role for the protection of the delicate local ecosystems and for the development of forms of ecotourism capable of safeguarding natural resources over time and supporting the local economic development which is based on tourism. The various forms of tourism activities in the area under study will therefore be analyzed in order to highlight areas of light and shade in terms of environmental protection and tourism sustainability.
