Klaus Alpers was a very important scholar, in particular for his studies about lexicography and Byzantine culture. Scholars, in his opinion, must study lexicography in historical perspective, but must also be aware of the relativity of their results, because lexicographical tradition is very flexible. As for Byzantine culture, he disputed the idea that the studies of classical texts had a gap during the iconoclastic period. He was also interested in history of classical scholarship and rightly reassessed Johann Tittmann, the editor of ‘Zonaras’.
