Tunnelling in urban areas, particularly in the crowded and overpopulated great metroplises of the developing World, experiences the most challenging issues and constraints at the nodes the infrastructure network necessarily requires: the Stations. Being the only part of an underground project that comes up to the surface, they represent the most important mean to procure materials, men and services to support the advance of tunnels, but at the same time they are the most visible sign of the change induced in the city and they represent a “business card” of the city growth. Considering that in these areas all metro services must be properly hosted and all functional interfaces take place, the Designer is required to pay great attention to both technical aspects and utilities requirements. This article is intended to provide a brief analysis of such studies, with particular reference to the remarkable experience of the design of UG-1 metro line in Bangalore, where an extensive series of numerical modelling provided the Designer with a proper information on the feasibility of the proposed solutions for stabilizing the temporary excavations, allowing a safe crossing of TBMs through the stations, optimizing the final structures and, most important, respecting the local population every day life and exigencies.
