Analysis of subsidence phenomena caused by mining activity in the Monteponi area.Monteponi mine, active from 1851 to 1998, was once one of the major European post-war mines, with an annual production of up to 600.000 t of lead and zinc minerals. The mine was primarilydeveloped underground using different methods depending on the dept of the ore bodies and onthe period when the mining took place. While the mine was still active, subsidence phenomena ofthe topographic surface, corresponding to the most superfi cial parts of the seam were identifi ed.More recently, at the beginning of 2000, the development of fractures was observed at the edgesof the Monteponi mining village.Today the potential risk of residual subsidence needs to be understood and quantifi ed. In the paper,The analysis of the subsidence phenomenon has bee developed on the base of the displacementmeasured at the ground surface and on the simulation of the collapse of the underground miningvoids. The paper describes the research carried out and proposes an interpretation model for theprediction of the future enlargement of the subsidence area.
