Il v. 33 dell’Alexandros pascoliano contiene la menzione dell’auleta Timoteo, che avrebbe accompagnato con la sua musica l’esordio della spedizione asiatica di Alessandro Magno. La fonte è specificata dallo stesso Pascoli negli appunti propedeutici alla stesura del poemetto (Imerio citato da Fozio), ma le interpretazioni degli studiosi in merito all’identità del musico, quando presenti, sono discordi. Questo Timoteo, lungi dal poter essere identificato nel celebre poeta lirico e citarodo di Mileto, è in realtà un auleta tebano del IV secolo a.C. Nel presente articolo sono esaminate e ordinate le testimonianze antiche disponibili sul suo conto e sono ipotizzate altre fonti note a Pascoli.

Timotheus, the aulos-player (Pascoli, Alexandros, 33)
V. 33 of Pascoli’s Alexandros mentions the aulete Timotheus, who was believed to have accompanied with his music the start of Alexander the Great’s Asian expedition. The source is specified by Pascoli himself in the preparatory notes for the poem (Himerius quoted by Photius), but scholars’ interpretations of the identity of the musician, when given, are conflicting. This Timotheus, far from being identifiable with the famous lyric poet and citharode from Miletus, is, in fact, a Theban aulete of the IV century BC. In this article are examined and organised the ancient testimonia available on him and are suggested other sources known to Pascoli.
