La spedizione portoghese in soccorso dell’impero cristiano di Etiopia, che si trovava in una situazione disperata a causa dell’invasione condotta dai musulmani del sultanato di Adal col supporto ottomano, si sviluppò dal 1541 al 1543; nonostante la sconfitta e la morte del suo giovane capo, Cristoforo de Gama, essa raggiunse lo scopo, contribuendo in modo determinante alla vittoria finale riportata dall’imperatore Claudio nella battaglia di Oinadaga, nella quale trovò la morte il condottiero musulmano Ahmad ibn Ibrahim, detto il Gragn (il Mancino). Questo può essere considerato un episodio forse minore, ma non privo di conseguenze di lunga durata, nel quadro dello scontro globale che, dal Maghreb alla zona danubiana e dal Mediterraneo all’Oceano Indiano, opponeva allora l’impero ottomano di Solimano il Magnifico a gran parte del mondo cristiano.

The Portuguese expedition in Ethiopia of the years 1541-1543 was aimed at saving that ancient christian empire, that was then in a desperate situation, after being invaded by the troops of the muslim sultanate of Adal, strongly supported by the Ottomans; in spite of the defeat and death of its young commander, Christofer de Gama, in the end the expedition reached its goal, as it gave a decisive contribution to the final victory obtained by the emperor Claude in the battle of Oinadaga, where met his death the Muslim commander Ahmad ibn Ibrahim, called the Gragn (the Left-handed). This can be seen as an other episode, maybe a minor one, but with long lasting consequences, of the world-wide struggle that, from the Maghreb to the Danube area and from the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean, then opposed the Ottoman Empire of Suleiman the Magnificent to a great part of the christian world.
