The German-Jewish scholar Paul Friedländer (1882-1968), who was a pupil of Wilamowitz and one of the most distinguished UCLA’s Professors of Classics, is well known for his volumes on Plato and on Byzantine ekphrasis. In his recent book Paul Friedländer. Ein klassischer Philologe zwischen Wilamowitz und George (2019), Kay Ehling admirably traces the life history of this ‘philologist-archaeologist’, who was one of the leading exponents of the German ‘Third Humanism’ in the 1920’s and who later escaped Nazi Germany to the United States (1939).
